Eltz Castle

More medieval flair is simply not possible: Eltz castle, which rules over the rugged Elzbach valley from a steep and remote spur of a mountain in the middle of the forest, was constructed in the 12th century and never destroyed. Its stunning magnificence adorned the 500 mark note. The Count and Countess of Eltz, who have made their fairy-tale dream made of towering dry-stone walls, timber framing, countless battlements and slated roofs accessible to visitors, still reside here today. A treasure chamber exhibits world-class gold and silver jewellery. The “Pope” of Art, Georg Dehio, named the Eltz “the castle per se”.
